3D Battlefield Images
First Day of Chancellorsville

These 3D images show the battlefield from May 1, 1863 from several different perspectives, using historic and modern sources of data.


Aerial photograph of the May 1st battlefield, looking toward the northwest.  Joe Hooker’s Federal troops (blue arrow) were advancing eastward, and Stonewall Jackson’s Confederates (gray arrow) were moving westward.  Click for a larger image of 300-400k.
 


Sketch by combat artist Albert Waud made on the afternoon of May 1st, 1863.  Waud’s viewpoint is shown on the above image.



3D GIS view of the battlefield from the south.  The image consists of a digital orthophoto quarter quad with superimposed troop positions from the first Frank O’Reilly Chancellorsville map.  This, and all subsequent 3D GIS images were created in Erdas Virtual GIS.  Click for a larger image of 300-400k.
